We wrote about Richmond, VA based Cardinal a little while back with their debut single ‘Tension Rod’, now the band are back with the latest release ‘One Wing’. The now five-piece started back in 2015 as a trio have since grown in numbers and in stature, once an emo rock outfit the band have slowly developed their sound into the more alternative realms. With a debut album slated for later this year, now really seems like the time for Cardinal to be putting the foot down and accelerating into 2019 at full speed.
‘One Wing’ shows off the influences the band take in superb fashion, hints of Manchester Orchestra shine though whilst their emo roots also find a place in the single. It is the dynamism in the single that gives it its edge, from soft to loud and the click of a finger the ban explore a range of soundscapes that demonstrate their ear for a solid arrangement. The soft melodies as the song progresses are accompanied by luscious harmonies, that once more add a new dimension to Cardinal’s work. This album is shaping up to be something quite special.
