There has been a lot going on in the world of one of Yack!’s artists of the year over the past 12 months or so. The now five-piece Bridges have recently given us a new EP to tuck into as well as a stunning new video that only came out today. We could rattle on for ages about these guys and everything they are doing, a busy band indeed, so instead we’ll let them talk you through in this featured artist interview.
It’s always a pleasure to get our whacked-out questions across to our favourite artists and Bridges have been no different – See what they have to say on their music old and new and how they would react to a good old fashioned Hulk Hogan mugging below.
There have been a lot of changes to Bridges of the last year, how has this affected the music?
We’re finally getting to where we’ve wanted to be for a long time! The changes have all been healthy and positive, with plenty of new material to show to the world.
Your latest EP has been a long time coming and has some obvious influences, but are there any artist that aren’t as well known that have had an impact on your music?
It’s a big question! We are all influenced by vast musical differences from Deerhunter to The Wonder Years. I guess the past year has been plenty of Frightened Rabbit, Manchester Orchestra, Phoebe Bridgers, Pinegrove – but could go on all day!
Equally, are there any non-musical people that have influenced your music?
Friends, family – a lot of our lyrics come from life experience.
What motivates Bridges – What gets you up in the morning?
We’ve never been ones to shy away from hard work, and the new direction is really exciting for us. For Henry it’s lots of coffee, fed through a series of tubes, that burns away the sadness ready for the day to begin. Or alarm clocks, that’s also a good answer to this kind of thing…
Do you think anyone actually likes The Beatles?
I don’t think anyone dislikes The Beatles – Helter Skelter is a belter and Chess loves George Harrison.
What does the rest of 2019 have in store for Bridges?
Well we’ve just released Amor which is the third tune from our EP – there will be one more song to come after this. Touring we are out and about ourselves through Feb and March, and we’ve just been added to 8 supports with The Slow Readers Club in April which we are over the moon about! Then onto festivals, more music into the Autumn.
If you could change one thing in this world what would it be? World peace and an end to hunger are not options here.
Coffee mugs with handles that are too small. Or maybe that Tom can learn to parallel park…
Picture the scene, you’re walking home one night after a few too many drinks at your favourite bar. A stranger approaches you in the dark and asks for all of your possessions. Its Hulk Hogan, what do you do?
To be honest I’d give him what he wanted if he called me ‘brotha’ just once.
Same scenario only this time its Carol Vorderman who is trying to mug you?
Bombard her with maths questions. It’s common knowledge that Carol’s weakness is the desire to solve all mathematical problems under the sun with the numbers provided to her. She would lose all interest in the 27p and a plectrum safely hidden in my pockets.
Lastly, and most importantly, who will be the most and least sexy celebrity of 2019?
Most is Emilia Clarke – I’d take her parents out to a nice dinner and congratulate them – they made a good one.
Least is Piers Morgan – bigotry is ugly
