New News Now with A.B Wolfestein: Brit Awards Nominations Announced and YACK! Predicts The Winners

The Brits are fast approaching, and on February 22nd the nation will be captivated by the biggest music industry event of the year. As ever the nominees feature an eclectic mix of established names and the hottest emerging pop artists, from David Bowie to Rag ‘n’ Bone Man, all looking to get their hands on a statuette that, this year, has been designed by british architect Zaha Hadid. Only a handful of performances have been announced so far, but they include the ever-popular The 1975 and 2013 Best British Female winner, Emily Sandé.

The nominees for the ten awards were announced on January 14th, and here at YACK! we are going to go out on a limb and predict the winner for each category. If you disagree why don’t you leave us a comment, or if you agree why don’t you leave us a comment, or if you have no opinion why don’t you leave us a comment. (Do you see what I’m getting at?)

So on to the first category…

British Breakthrough Act

And the nominees are…

Anne-Marie – Blossoms – Rag’n’Bone Man – Skepta – Stormzy

Rag-N-Bone-Man-Press-Shot-For-Site2.jpgYACK! Predicts- Rag’n’Bone Man

You just cannot look past Rag’n’Bone Man as the breakthrough act this year, his single Human has been dominating the air waves since its release in July, and has reached the heady heights of number 2 in the UK charts. He has already picked up the critics choice award at this Brit awards and I cannot see that being his only piece of silverware this year.

British Artist Video

And the nominees are…

Adele – ‘Send My Love (To Your New Lover)’, Calvin Harris feat. Rihanna – ‘This Is What You Came For’, Clean Bandit feat. Sean Paul & Anne-Marie – ‘Rockabye’, Coldplay – ‘Hymn for the Weekend’,  James Arthur – ‘Say You Won’t Let Go’,  Jonas Blue feat. Dakota – ‘Fast Car’,  Little Mix feat. Sean Paul – ‘Hair’,  One Direction – ‘History’,  Tinie Tempah feat. Zara Larsson – ‘Girls Like’,  Zayn – ‘Pillowtalk’

YACK! Predicts- One Direction  ‘History’

Seeing as this award is given based on the public vote One Direction are destined to run away with this award due to the fact there are a billion little girls that adore Harry and the gang. That being said History is a very very catchy number and the video is rather fun, perhaps it deserves to win on its own merit.

Mastercard British Album of the Year

And the nominees are…

The 1975i like it when you sleep, for you are so beautiful yet so unaware of it, David BowieBlackstar, Kano Made In The Manor, Michael KiwanukaLove & Hate, SkeptaKonnichiwa

YACK! Predicts- David Bowie ‘Blackstar’

It’s a shame that David Bowie will probably sweep up a number of awards this year based on his untimely death in early 2016. It will also be extremely difficult for Blackstar to win an award without the feeling that it has not won solely on its own merit. Whatever the reason might be, YACK! predicts Blackstar will take this one comfortably.

British Female Solo Artist

And the nominees are…

Anohni -Ellie Goulding -Emeli Sandé -Lianne La Havas – Nao

YACK! Predicts- Ellie Goulding

Ellie Goulding has had a mixed 2016. After announcing in March that she would be unlikely to release any music until 2017, Goulding put out the smash hit Still Falling For You which also featured on the soundtrack to the latest Bridget Jones movie. Based on the strength of this release and the fact it has been a radio staple since August, Goulding should take Best British Female

British Male Solo Artist

And the nominees are…

Craig David -David Bowie -Kano -Michael Kiwanuka -Skepta

YACK! Predicts- David Bowie

As much as we want Craig David to pick up this award for his hugely anticipated comeback (when I say hugely anticipated I mean, I was really looking forward to it) it looks more likely that the late David Bowie will take home another award. Well he won’t take it home, but you know what I mean.

British Group

And the nominees are…

The 1975 -Bastille – Biffy Clyro -Little Mix -Radiohead

YACK! Predicts- The 1975

The 1975 have been growing in popularity from the second they burst on to the scene, and that popularity didn’t stop growing throughout 2016. After undertaking a huge world tour that still hasn’t finished and the release of the massively successful  I like it when you sleep, for you are so beautiful yet so unaware of it, YACK! can’t look past the boys from Manchester.

British Single

And the nominees are…

Alan Walker – ‘Faded’, Calum Scott – ‘Dancing On My Own’, Calvin Harris feat. Rihanna – ‘This Is What You Came For’, Clean Bandit feat. Sean Paul & Anne-Marie – ‘Rockabye’, Coldplay – ‘Hymn For The Weekend’, James Arthur – ‘Say You Won’t Let Go’, Jonas Blue feat. Dakota – ‘Fast Car’, Little Mix – ‘Shout Out To My Ex’, Tinie Tempah feat. Zara Larsson – ‘Girls Like’, Zayn – ‘Pillowtalk’

YACK! Predicts- Clean Bandit feat. Sean Paul & Anne-Marie Rockabye

Nine weeks at number 1 in the UK, number 1 in over 10 different countries, Christmas number 1, gone platinum and it is an absolute banger, need I say anymore?

International Female Solo Artist

And the nominees are…

Beyoncé – Christine and the Queens -Rihanna -Sia – Solange

YACK! Predicts- Sia

Hit after hit after hit, Sia  has been the outstanding female artist of 2016. Her artistic videos and thoughtful songwriting has made Sia one of the most understated female performers of the last decade (you heard it here first), this year YACK! believes that she can crush the Queen B and be crowned Best International Female Solo Artist.

International Male Solo Artist

And the nominees are…

Bon Iver – Bruno Mars – Drake -Leonard Cohen -The Weekend

YACK! Predicts- Bruno Mars

24K Magic has been one of the pop highlights of the past twleve months for us here at YACK!. Bruno Mars has built an impressive repetiore in his relativly short career, but 24K Magic is by far his most accomplished work, and just when you thought he was already at the top it seems Mars is destined to take another step on the ladder of musical hierachy.

International Group

And the nominees are…

A Tribe Called Quest – Drake & Future -Kings of Leon -Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds – Twenty One Pilots

YACK! Predicts- Twenty One Pilots

Featuring on the Suicide Squad soundtrack, Twenty One Pilots have joined the ranks of the big boys this year becoming only the third act to ever have two singles in the top five of the Billboard 100 chart simultaneously. The only two acts to achieve this acolade before were Elvis Presley and the Beatles, which isn’t bad company to keep. Most of the previous year has been spent on the road performing on the Emotional Rollercoaster World Tour, mkaing a number of tastful television appearances along the way. More than enough to conquer fading rock ‘n’ roll legends, Kings of Leon.
